Mercury has not turned around. Mercury retrograde 2026 runs from October 24 to November 13, and the planet only appears to move backward against the stars, a trick of perspective as Earth and Mercury pass each other on their orbits. People still describe restless nights, vivid dreams and a mind that will not settle during these weeks.

This article goes through what the sky actually does, what studies have measured about sleep and the sky, and why the idea can feel so personal. If your evenings run busy during these weeks, Hypnagogia-Pass is one calm wind-down to consider. Most studies below are observational, and none of them tested Mercury.

Key takeaways

  • Retrograde is an apparent motion that comes from how Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun, and Mercury does it three or four times a year.

  • We found no published study that tested Mercury retrograde against sleep, mood or anxiety, so claims about it rest on personal reports.

  • The moon is the one sky cycle with sleep research behind it, and the results disagree: two studies found shorter sleep near the full moon, a larger one found no significant difference.

  • Belief in astrology is common: Pew's 2024 survey of 9,593 US adults found that 30% consult astrology, tarot or a fortune teller at least once a year.

  • Reviews link worry and mental activity before bed with trouble falling asleep, which is one way a story about a bad night can matter without any planet involved.

What Mercury retrograde is, and when it ends

Retrograde is an appearance. According to Star Walk, a planet seems to move westward against the background stars because Earth and the planet travel around the Sun at different speeds and distances. Mercury does this three or four times a year, and the current stretch lasts from October 24 to November 13, 2026.

One date inside that window is not astronomical at all. In the United States, the clock change on November 1 lands in the middle of it, and nights are also getting longer for readers in the Northern Hemisphere. Several things shift at once, which makes it hard for anyone to say which one a restless night belongs to.

What studies show about the sky and sleep

We searched PubMed for studies that link Mercury retrograde to sleep, mood or anxiety and did not find one we could open. That is not a verdict on anyone's experience. It means the question has not been tested in a published paper we could read.

The moon is the sky cycle that researchers have measured. A 2013 analysis in Current Biology looked back at data from a controlled laboratory study and found that around the full moon, deep-sleep brain activity fell by 30%, falling asleep took 5 minutes longer, and total sleep was about 20 minutes shorter. A 2021 study in Science Advances used wrist sensors in indigenous Toba/Qom communities in Argentina and in a US urban setting, and found that sleep started later and was shorter on the nights before the full moon, which the authors link to moonlight.

A larger study came out differently. In a 2015 study in Sleep Medicine, 2,125 adults had a full sleep recording at home, and sleep time did not differ between full moon (398 minutes), waxing or waning moon (402) and new moon (403). The authors concluded that there was no evidence of a significant effect of lunar phases. Three studies, two answers, which is a fair summary of where this research stands. The studies also differ in method: one reanalysed laboratory data collected for another purpose, one tracked sleep with wrist sensors, and one used home recordings in adults with an average age of 59, so they are not direct replications of each other. A restless night has many ordinary causes, and a plan for what to do when you cannot sleep right now does not depend on the sky.

Why the idea feels personal, and why the mind keeps checking

Psychologists call one reason the Barnum effect: people feel that a generic description applies specifically to them, even though it fits almost everyone. A classic 1977 paper in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology is titled "Acceptance of personality interpretations: the Barnum Effect and beyond".

The belief is widespread. Pew Research Center's fall 2024 survey of 9,593 US adults found that 28% consult astrology or horoscopes at least once a year and 27% believe in astrology, with 35% of women and 18% of men saying so. A 2022 scoping review linked belief in astrology with thinking style, self-concept verification and stress, and noted a few cases of distress with excessive fortune-telling use. It could not say which comes first.

Sleep research adds a second layer. A 2020 systematic review of pre-sleep thinking linked insomnia with more thoughts that interfere with sleep, worries, covert monitoring and mental arousal. For people who already lie awake thinking, how to stop overthinking before sleep is a common question, and an explanation such as "it is retrograde" can become one more thing to monitor. That is our reading, not a study result. Surveys on sleep anxiety show how common that nighttime checking is, and a mind racing at night rarely needs a planet to get started.

Something to try tonight

Hypnagogia is the drifting, half-lit stretch between waking and sleep. Hypnagogia-Pass is our library of 30 videos, more than 2,400 minutes in total, curated by CantSwitchOff to walk you through the hypnagogic pass: a word, then a matching picture, one after another on a dark screen, with no talking and soft background sound. No ads. It is something to try, not a treatment. You can read why we built Hypnagogia-Pass before you decide.

Your Mercury retrograde questions, answered

Can Mercury retrograde cause emotional changes?

We found no published study that tested Mercury retrograde against mood, anxiety or sleep. Reports of emotional changes during these weeks come from personal accounts. The research that exists looks at belief: a 2022 scoping review linked belief in astrology with thinking style and stress, without showing that a planet causes anything.

Why can't I sleep during Mercury retrograde?

No published study we could open links Mercury retrograde to sleep. The sky cycle that has been studied is the full moon, and results disagree: a 2013 analysis found about 20 minutes less sleep near the full moon, while a 2015 study of 2,125 adults found no significant difference. Everyday causes are easier to measure.

Why do people believe astrology is real?

Research has described several reasons rather than ranking them. Pew's fall 2024 survey found that 27% of US adults believe in astrology, and a 2022 review linked belief with thinking style and self-concept verification. Psychologists also point to the Barnum effect, in which general descriptions feel written for one person.

Can worrying about the unknown keep you awake at night?

Studies link the two. A 2019 study of 300 university students found that intolerance of uncertainty was associated with insomnia symptoms and poorer sleep quality through anxiety sensitivity, depression and anxiety. The design was correlational, so it shows association, not cause. A 2020 systematic review also linked worry and mental arousal with insomnia.

Can believing in astrology make people more stressed?

A 2022 scoping review found belief in astrology associated with stress, among other psychological factors, and described a few cases of distress with excessive fortune-telling use. It could not say which comes first. We also found no study showing that horoscopes lower anxiety.
